The long awaited new translation of the Roman Missal is in effect as of today (Hoo-rah)! The 3rd addition of the Roman Missal translates into English much closer to the original Latin text. This is a great blessing for the Universal Church. Here are some pictures of the new Missal that will be used at St. Joseph's at the Wednesday and Sunday Masses said in the vernacular:

Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament

Father Roman announced during his homily at today's 10:00 am Mass that Benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament will return after the 10:00 a.m. Mass throughout the Advent Season! Depending on the feedback from our parishioners, he will make the decision whether to have this Holy Service return on a permanent basis!

Please stay after Mass and spend some quite time with our Lord!

Wash your lederhosen! Maifest will be held this year on Sunday May 22nd between 12:30 and 3:00 p.m.

Dotties will handle the catering; preparing the following traditional German dishes: breaded pork chops, mushroom spaetzle, stuffed cabbage, German potato salad, salads, desserts as well as a cash bar that will include imported German beer.

Tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for children. All proceeds benefit St. Joseph restoration projects.

Two special Tridentine Masses this week at St. Joseph!

Parish organist, choirmaster, music aficionado and overall decent fellow Michael Semaan, informed the blog this morning of two special Masses to be held this week at St. Joe's. Here are the details from Michael himself!

This Easter Friday at 12:15 PM, we will have a special Latin Tridentine High Mass in conjunction with our Detroit Historic Churches Bus Pilgrimage in which approximately 195 people are expected to participate. Our Pastor, Father Paul Czarnota will be the Celebrant and two guest choirs (members of the the St. Joseph Cappella and the Ss. Cyril & Methodius Youth Choir) along with an outstanding soloist (Ruth LaPeyre) will also participate. If you come early at 11 AM, you can also take part in an informative hour long Church tour and talk given by St. Joseph Church historian and tour guide Patrick Degens (for, principally by coincidence, another bus group from St. Joseph Church in Lake Orion; unfortunately, this group cannot also stay for this Mass). Following this Mass, we too will be given a tour and talk by Sean Dey, another St. Joseph tour guide, and who is also accompanying us on our bus pilgrimage.

This Divine Mercy Sunday at 3 PM, we will have another special Latin Tridentine Mass with the St. Joseph Cappella, Soloists, and Orchestra. Father Robert Marczewski will be the Celebrant and Confession will be available beginning at 1 PM. The music will feature Schubert's Mass in C and Mozart's Regina Coeli. This Easter Sunday's music performance of these works was very well received and we are hoping for and expecting an outstanding turnout for Divine Mercy Sunday.

New Parochial Administrator of our church...

The blog has learned today the name of our new Parochial Administrator; Father Darell Roman. Father Roman is currently the associate pastor at St. Joseph Church in Lake Orion, MI. In addition to his duties at St Joseph, Father Roman will be the Parochial Administrator of St. Josaphat and pastor of Sweetest Heart of Mary. Here is his biography from the St. Joseph Church in Lake Orion's web site:

My name is Fr. Darrell Roman. I was born in Detroit on October 9, 1961 to Albie and Sylvia (Bugaj) Roman. I am the oldest of three children. My youngest sister, Emily, is married to Matt Kopko and they have three boys: Gabriel, Nicholas, and Gregory. I also have a younger brother, Christopher.

I grew up in Livonia and attended St. Robert Bellarmine Grade School, Bishop Borgess High School, and Madonna College. In 1985, I entered the Society of Christ in Poland. The charism of the order is to minister to Polish immigrants throughout the world. After being ordained in Poznan, Poland in 1993, I was assigned to a number of parishes in the United States.

After a period of prayer and discernment, I felt God calling me to minister as a Diocesan priest. I am looking forward to spending the next two years here at St. Joseph as your associate pastor and being a part of your parish family.

Special visitors from St. Joseph Chaldean Catholic Church

We were blessed by a visit from the Chaldean community from St. Joseph's Chaldean Catholic Church in Troy. Close to 50 of their parishioners showed up to support us on our mutual patrons feast!!! One of their parishioners graciously lead us in the Rosary!

This scene confirms why St. Joseph is the patron saint of happy deaths, for at the time of his death he was in the company of the Blessed Mother and our Lord Jesus Christ.

Remember the Sunday Mass schedule is changing effective March 1, 2011!.  Beginning in March the Sunday schedule is as follows:

10:00 a.m.                    Latin (Novus Ordo) ad orientem; this will be the "High Mass"

11:30 to 11:50 am.         Confessions

12:00 noon                     English (Novus Ordo) ad orientem; this will be a "Low Mass"

The addition of confessions on Sunday compliments confession that is offered before the Wednesday noon Mass beginning at 11:30 a.m.

Today was bake sale Sunday at St. Joe's. The bake sales help supplement the cost of utilities at the parish. Dorothy Degans bakes in excess of 15 to 20 items per month! Here is Dorothy showing off one of her delicious creations:

In addition to Dorothy, the impeccably dressed and perfectly coiffed Mr. Michael Parsons is a major baker as well. Here is Michael in action!

Baking for the bake sales is a great way to participate in the fundraising for our church; the bake sale team is always looking for more bakers to help in this ministry. Thanks Dorothy and Michael for all you do!

Church uses Skype to bring tribute service to cancer patient's hospital room

ROYAL OAK, Mich. (WXYZ) - When someone misses church it doesn’t usually make headlines, unless you’re Carole Varga.

The 67 year-old woman is battling brain and bone cancer. This is after she recently sent her breast cancer into remission.

Carole’s church, St. Joseph in Detroit, wanted to show their support for Carole during this tough time, so they dedicated their service to Varga on Sunday. But last week Carol got some bad news – her cancer was spreading and she had to be checked into the hospital.

So what did her congregation do? They Skype'd her special service to her hospital room at Beaumont in Royal Oak

“I wish I could be there. But you can’t be two places at the same time. I didn’t want to postpone it. I didn’t even know if I would still be around. You just don’t know,” Varga said from her hospital room.

During the special service parishioners lined up to extend their love and well wishes to Carole.

The service also included a lot of music – Carole herself is an avid singer, belonging to several area choirs.

“It’s very helpful to have supporters. Five years ago when this all started I never would have thought it. I’ve been so healthy for so long.”

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

On this fourth Sunday of Advent, the Gospel of Saint Matthew tells us the story of Jesus’ birth through the eyes of Saint Joseph. He was betrothed to Mary, “but before they lived together, she was found with child through the Holy Spirit” (Mt, 1:18). The Son of God, fulfilling an ancient prophecy (cf Is, 7:14), became a man in the womb of a virgin, and this mystery shows God’s love, wisdom and power for humanity, hurt by sin. Saint Joseph is presented as a “righteous man” (Mt, 1:19), faithful to God’s law, and ready to do his will. For this reason, he becomes a party to the Mystery of the Incarnation when an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the Holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her. She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins” (Mt, 1:20-21). And so it came about that Joseph gave up the idea of quietly repudiating Mary, and took her in because at this moment his eyes could see in her the work of God.

In his commentary on Saint Luke, Saint Ambrose said, “in Joseph you find the friendliness of the righteous, to give greater worthiness to his standing as witness” (Exp. Ev. sec. Lucam II, 5: CCL 14, 32-33). “He,” Ambrose said, “could not contaminate the temple of the Holy Spirit, the Mother of the Lord, the womb fecundated by mystery” (ibid, II, 6: CCL 14, 33). Despite his turmoil, Joseph did “as the angel of the Lord ordered”, certain that he was doing the right thing. Even when he gave the name “Jesus” to the child who carries the universe, he joined the army of humble and faithful servants, like the angels and the prophets as well as the martyrs and the apostles, praised in ancient eastern hymns. Saint Joseph announced the marvels of the Lord and bore witness to Mary’s virginity, God’s selfless deed, whilst protecting the early life of the Messiah. Let us venerate Jesus’ lawful father (cf CCC, 532), because in him we see new man, who looked to the future with confidence and courage, who disregarded his own goals, but entrusted himself completely to the infinite mercy of the One who fulfils prophecies and opens time to salvation.

Dear friends, I wish to entrust all pastors to Saint Joseph, universal patron of the Church, urging them to “quietly present Christ’s words and actions each day to the faithful and to the whole world,” (Letter proclaiming a Year for Priests). May our life join more and more the Person of Jesus, because the “One who is the Word takes on Himself a body, comes from God as a man and draws to himself the whole of humanity, bringing it into the word of God (Gesù di Nazaret, Milan: 2007, 383).

Let us confidently call on the Virgin Mary, full of grace, “adorned with God”, so that on this coming Christmas, our eyes might open and see Jesus, and the heart rejoice in this admirable meeting of love.

Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception

Today is the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. This feast day was defined as a dogma by Pope Pius IX in his constitution Ineffabilis Deus on 8 December 1854. The doctrine states that, from the first moment of her existence, Mary was preserved by God from the Original Sin and filled with sanctifying grace that would normally come with baptism after birth.

At St. Joseph, we have a number of statues of Mary, but none are as spectacular that the statue of Her, with the Christ Child, above the Marian alter located on the gospel side of the church

Capital Campaign

On December 2nd, Father Czarnota held a joint meeting with parishioners from the whole cluster detailing the upcoming Capital Campaign. The Capital Campaign is a fundraiser for not only the Parish, but also for the Archdiocese.

Each parish will be required to raise 90% of their prior years gross receipts over the next three years. Each Parish will be allowed to keep 70% of what was raised; the Archdiocese will retain the remaining 30%. Father Czarnota will be meeting with the finance council from each parish in the cluster to work out the details.

To day is the Solemnity of Christ the King, which falls on the last Sunday of the liturgical year.

The Gospel reading was from Luke 23:35-43

The rulers sneered at Jesus and said, He saved others, let him save himself if he is the chosen one, the Christ of God." Even the soldiers jeered at him. As they approached to offer him wine they called out, "If you are King of the Jews, save yourself." Above him there was an inscription that read,"This is the King of the Jews."Now one of the criminals hanging there reviled Jesus, saying,"Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us." The other, however, rebuking him, said in reply,"Have you no fear of God, for you are subject to the same condemnation? And indeed, we have been condemned justly, for the sentence we received corresponds to our crimes, but this man has done nothing criminal." Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom." He replied to him, "Amen, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise."

Let us pray that we have the same sure faith that the good thief, St. Dismas had when we have an opportunity to express it.

At 1:30, the German Youth Dancers from the Carpathia Club arrived and put on one heck of a show...

These dancers were one of the highlights of the event for sure..

Meanwhile the crowd became larger and larger as the Choral Fest drew near...

Traditional German folk music was played by Herb Langegger...

Herb and his friend Tony also won "the Blog's" best dressed award...

At 3:00 sharp the Choral Concert began. Here is the event program...

After the Concert, the winning raffle tickets were drawn by St. Joseph's pastor Father Czarnota. This years prizes included dinner for two at any restaurant in southeast Michigan, an autographed Gordie Howe hockey stick and two autographed baseballs, one from Miguel Cabrarra and one from Justin Verlander!

And finally the 2010 Oktoberfest ended with a trip back in time with the 1950's and 1960's cover band the Lira's!

And there it is, the 2010 Oktoberfest. A great many thanks to all the hard work, countless hours of planning, preparation and execution by all the parish volunteers who made this event happen. It was a great event because of all of you.

We pray through all our labors, we can continue the tradition, at our little slice of heaven on Jay Street. St. Joseph....pray for us!

At 4:00 pm, the event kicked off with an unreal performance by the Notre Dame Prep Jazz Band...

They made their patron Our Lady and of course St. Joseph proud...

Next up, Sean Day provided a church tour and history...

From its founding as a simple wood church...

To its present glory....

The night ended with performances by two bands. First by the Brazilian and American Jazz bank Brazil and Beyond...

All the while things were hopping in the hall...

And at the bar...

The final performance for the night was by the 1930's era Gypsy-Jazz band Royal Garden Trio...

These guys were flat out amazing...

And so the first night of this years' Oktoberfest ended as it began...

Feast of St. Matthew the Apostle and Evangelist

This Tuesday September 21st is the Feast of St. Matthew the Apostle and Evangelist. Here is a quick biography on this Saint from Saints.SQPN:

Son of Alphaeus, he lived at Capenaum on Lake Genesareth. He was a Roman tax collector, a position equated with collaboration with the enemy by those from whom he collected taxes. Jesus’ contemporaries were surprised to see the Christ with a traitor, but Jesus explained that he had come “not to call the just, but sinners.”

Matthew’s Gospel is given pride of place in the canon of the New Testament, and was written to convince Jewish readers that their anticipated Messiah had come in the person of Jesus. He preached among the Jews for 15 years; his audiences may have included the Jewish enclave in Ethiopia, and places in the East.

Here is an excerpt from St. Bede the Venerable on St. Matthew:

“Jesus saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax office, and he said to him: Follow me.” Jesus saw Matthew, not merely in the usual sense, but more significantly with his merciful understanding of men.” He saw the tax collector and, because he saw him through the eyes of mercy and chose him, he said to him: “Follow me.” This following meant imitating the pattern of his life - not just walking after him. Saint John tells us: “Whoever says he abides in Christ ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.” “And he rose and followed him.” There is no reason for surprise that the tax collector abandoned earthly wealth as soon as the Lord commanded him. Nor should one be amazed that neglecting his wealth, he joined a band of men whose leader had, on Matthew’s assessment, no riches at all. Our Lord summoned Matthew by speaking to him in words. By an invisible, interior impulse flooding his mind with the light of grace, he instructed him to walk in his footsteps. In this way Matthew could understand that Christ, who was summoning him away from earthly possessions, had incorruptible treasures of heaven in his gift."

After the Wednesday Mass, our relic of St. Matthew will be venerated after Benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament.

Today is the Solemnity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This doctrine was dogmatically and infallibly defined by Pope Pius XII on November 1, 1950 in his Apostolic Constitution Munificentissimus Deus. In addition to the great Solemnity being celebrated today, it also marked the return of Father Marczewski who has been away for the past two and a half months.

Latin Liturgy Association

On July 16, 17 and 18th the Latin LiturgyAssociation (LLA) held their annual convention in Detroit. Our cluster (St. Joseph, St. Josaphat, Sweetest Heart of Mary as well as St. Alburtus) held many of the special Masses, lectures and liturgical events. On Saturday Morning July 16th, St. Joseph Church held a Mass in Latin, in the Ordinary form said by Father Scott J. Haynes, S.C.J.of St. John Cantius in Chicago.

The Mass celebrated was the "Common of the Blessed Virgin Mary." The Master of Ceremonies for this special Mass was the President of the LLA, Jim Pauer. Here is the Mass booklet from today's Mass:

Mr. Pauer additionally provided the introductory remarks in St. Joseph's Parish Hall to kick off the conference:

Lords Cardinal,
Venerated Brothers in the Episcopate and in the Priesthood
Distinguished Gentlemen and Ladies,

It is a motive of great joy to me to inaugurate this fountain in the Vatican Gardens, in a natural context of singular beauty. It is a work that is going to enhance the artistic patrimony of this enchanting green space of Vatican City, rich in historic-artistic testimonies of various periods. In fact, not only the lawn, the flowers, the trees, but also the towers, the little houses, the pavilions, the fountains, the statues and the other constructions make of these gardens a fascinating unicum. They were for my predecessors, and are also for me, a vital space, a place that I often frequent to spend some time in prayer and in serene relaxation.

In addressing my cordial greeting to each one of you, I wish to express my heartfelt gratitude for this present, which you have given me, dedicating it to St. Joseph. Thank you for this kind and courteous thought! It was a committed enterprise, which witnessed the collaboration of many. I thank first of all the Lord Cardinal Giovanni Lajolo also for the words that he addressed to me and for the interesting presentation of the works carried out. With him I thank the archbishop, monsignor Carlo Maria Viganò and the bishop, monsignor Giorgio Corbellini, respectively secretary-general and vice secretary-general of the governorate. I express my intense appreciation to the Office of Technical Services, the planner and sculptor, the consultants and the work team, with a special thought to the Hintze spouses and to Mr. Castrignano, of London, who generously financed the work, as well as to the Sisters of St. Joseph of Kyoto. A word of gratitude to the Province of Trent, to the municipalities and to the Trent companies, for their contribution.

This fountain is dedicated to St. Joseph, beloved and close figure to the heart of the People of God and to my heart. The six bronze panels that embellish it evoke as many moments of his life. I wish to pause briefly on them. The first panel represents the espousals between Joseph and Mary; it is an episode of great importance. Joseph was of the royal line of David and, in virtue of his marriage to Mary, would confer on the Son of the Virgin -- on God's Son -- the legal tile of "son of David," thus fulfilling the prophecies. The espousals of Joseph and Mary are, because of this, a human event, but determinant in the history of humanity's salvation, in the realization of the promises of God; because of this, it also has a supernatural connotation, which the two protagonists accept with humility and trust.

Very soon the moment of trial arrives for Joseph, a trial challenging for his faith.

Engaged to Mary, before going to live with her, he discovers her mysterious maternity and is disturbed. The Evangelist Matthew stresses that, being a just man, he was unwilling to repudiate her, and therefore decided to send her away quietly (cf. Matthew 1:19). But in his dreams -- as he is represented in the second panel -- the angel made him understand that what was happening in Mary was the work of the Holy Spirit; and Joseph, trusting in God, consents and cooperates in the plan of salvation. The divine intervention in his life could not but perturb his heart. To trust God does not mean to see everything clearly according to our criteria, it does not mean to carry out what we have planned; to trust God means to empty ourselves of ourselves and to deny ourselves, because only one who accepts losing himself for God can be "just" as St. Joseph, that is, can conform his own will to God's and thus be fulfilled.

The Gospel, as we know, has not kept any word from Joseph, who carries out his activity in silence. It is the style that characterizes his whole existence, both before finding himself before the mystery of God's action in his spouse, as well as when -- conscious of this mystery -- he is with Mary in the Nativity -- represented in the third image. On that holy night, in Bethlehem, with Mary and the Child, is Joseph, to whom the Heavenly Father entrusted the daily care of his Son on earth, a care carried out with humility and in silence.

The fourth panel reproduces the dramatic scene of the Flight into Egypt to escape the homicidal violence of Herod. Joseph is compelled to leave his land with his family, in haste: it is another mysterious moment of his life; another trial in which he is asked for full fidelity to God's plan.

Later in the Gospel, Joseph appears in only one more episode, when he goes to Jerusalem and lives the anguish of losing the son Jesus. St. Luke describes the anxious search and the wonder at finding him in the Temple -- as it appears in the fifth panel -- but even greater is the astonishment at hearing the mysterious words: "How is it that you sought me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father's house?" (Luke 2:49). This twofold question of the Son of God helps us to understand the mystery of Joseph's paternity. Reminding his own parents of the primacy of the One he calls "my Father," Jesus affirms the primacy of the will of God over every other will, and reveals to Joseph the profound truth of his role: He too is called to be a disciple of Jesus, dedicating his existence to the service of the Son of God and of the Virgin Mother, in obedience to the Heavenly Father.

The sixth panel represents Joseph's work in his shop in Nazareth. Jesus worked with him. The Son of God is hidden from men and only Mary and Joseph guard his mystery and live it each day: The Word Incarnate grows as man in the shadow of his parents, but, at the same time, they remain, in turn, hidden in Christ, in his mystery, living their vocation.

Dear brothers and sisters, this beautiful fountain dedicated to St. Joseph constitutes a symbolic reminder of the values of simplicity and humility in carrying out day by day the will of God, values that distinguished the silent but beautiful life of the Custodian of the Redeemer. To his intercession I entrust the hopes of the Church and of the world. May he, together with the Virgin Mary, his spouse, always guide my way and yours, so that we are able to be joyful instruments of peace and of salvation.

We were blest this Sunday to have our new Pastor, Father Paul Czarnota, at St. Joseph to offer Holy Mass at both the 10:30 am. Latin and the 12 noon English Mass.

Ordinary time, or counted time, begins the day after the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord and ends on Ash Wednesday. There are 33 or 34 weekends in Ordinary time; the Sunday readings are semi-continuous and come mainly from the synoptic Gospels. The liturgical color is green unless pre-empted by Solemnity that is of of a different color such as white on the Solemnity of Christ the King.

This week was the 12th Sunday in Ordinary time (Year C); the prayer over the gifts was as follows:

"Lord receive our offering, and may this sacrifice of praise purify us in mind and heart and make us always eager to serve you. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen."

Octoberfest Kickoff Meeting

At 7:00pm this evening in the social hall was the kickoff meeting for this year's Oktoberfest. The Oktoberfest is the main fundraiser for St. Joseph's church each year. Tasks were organized and leaders selected; the tentative date for this years event is September 25th and 26th.
